As witnessed by the AdventRelief Ukraine Team and the UN
- During the past months, Ukrainians continue to suffer from escalated attacks, killing or injuring civilians and damaging homes, hospitals, and schools.
- Recent “intensified hostilities in Kharkiv Oblast caused the largest displacement in Ukraine since 2023; Donetska Oblast suffered new destruction, with humanitarian access shrinking.”
- Russia has been relentless in its attacks on the energy infrastructure, causing blackouts as Ukraine struggles to maintain critical services. Millions of people have lost access to essential services. Just a few days ago, an energy station near our country director’s home was destroyed along with several others in the country.
- The ever- approaching frontline threatens humanitarian services in Donetsk Oblast. The AdventRelief dental clinic, the only free clinic of its kind in the area if not the country, remains on high alert, yet continues its services. Our dental staff treats civilians from villages close to the frontline and in the region around Sloviansk. Military personnel receive priority treatment at this clinic. We provide pain relief and even life-saving dental surgery.
Kyiv School of Economics estimates infrastructure damage in Ukraine at $135 billion. This affects energy infrastructure, water supply, health care, schools and homes. In Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson Oblasts, civilian life, communities, and livelihoods are vulnerable. In May, more than 18,000 people were displaced in Kharkiv Oblast alone.
As Ukrainians face continued death and destruction, our commitment to their health and welfare must be even stronger. We are trying to provide vital medical care to some of the 4 million internally displaced people, including 1 million children, depleted and threatened, who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones.
Although 40 per cent of the Ukrainian population will need humanitarian assistance in 2024, those in the east and south, where our projects are focused, require the most attention. The UN classifies the need in these areas as “extreme and catastrophic severity.”
This is no time for compassion fatigue.
