It’s been an exciting week for our AdventRelief team – through a very effective partnership with Ishaka Adventist Hospital and ADRA Uganda we’ve been able to open a new inpatient malaria unit for children with severe malaria in Kyaka 2 Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda. From the first day of opening, the ward has been full of very sick children needing intravenous treatment for severe malaria.
Kyaka 2 is home to 200 000 refugees who have fled from the war torn regions of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The greatest burden of disease in the settlement is malaria, with children and pregnant women being at greatest risk of death from the disease.
Our sincere thanks to our donors in the USA who have sponsored the clinic ops, and to ADRA Netherlands for sponsoring medicines for the facility.
We still have many hurdles to cross. The unit needs an ambulance, and a malaria lab. But the clinic is open, and children are being treated – mission accomplished!
