Our team has been back in Uganda this past week visiting the ADRA Clinic in the massive Kyaka 2 Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda. We partnered with ADRA Uganda to set up the unit in 2018 and it is now operated through another local partnership with Ishaka Adventist Hospital.
It was very moving to be back and see the hundreds of Congolese refugees being treated. Especially noticeable were the many sick children receiving care.
The clinic is extremely busy! Here are the approximate figures for the past year.
85 000 patients treated.
30 000 children treated.
Over 40 000 cases of malaria treated.
The biggest burden of disease is infectious diseases like malaria.
The small but capable medical team on the ground is led by Clinical Officers Anita Karungi and Edridah Akankwatsa with oversight from Dr Brian Musingizi the head of Ishaka Hospital.
We’d like to thank them and ADRA Uganda for all the hard work put in to keep this clinic open.
In addition, a meaningful new program supporting female victims of gender based violence has opened in the facility and is run by the clinical team, with sponsorship from Caritas.
We are looking at options to reopen our volunteer program to support this facility as they are very short staffed.
The biggest need? There is a huge shortage of MALARIA TEST KITS and MALARIA MEDICINES. Access to timely diagnosis and treatment saves lives. It’s especially critical for pregnant women and children who are much more vulnerable to the disease. Just for some perspective – a malaria test costs 25 US cents and a full course of treatment less than 2 US dollars.
If youd like to donate to the malaria program click on this link and specify “Uganda” in the comments section.
Proceeds all go directly to the field.
