Our Iraq emergency clinic continues to serve the three large camps of displaced persons east of the city of Mosul.
Key Figures
Camp/host population size: Around 15 000
Patients treated every month: 800 – 1000
This remains our biggest project. The clinic provides emergency and acute care to adults and children, and most importantly ensures that there is medical cover for the camps at night. Especially now as winter approaches our clinics are very busy as we treat many patients with health issues related to the extreme cold – in particular the elderly.
Our facility is run by our team of capable of Iraqi nurses and doctors from Erbil and Mosul, as well as a number of international medical volunteers that have joined our team this year. Lead by Hilde and Leah Camacho, our country manager and project coordinator, the clinic treats around 1000 patients every month, and has effectively reduced the emergency referrals to larger centres by over 90%. We maintain close relationships with the local department of health and they have expressed their appreciation for our continuing services in this community, at a time when there is little funding available, and when most international medical NGOs have left.
We love this project – our constant presence in this community over the past few years has allowed us to develop close relationships with the families we serve. Many are the days that our team eat meals in their tents, and spend time talking about the challenges that they face every day. They truly are one of the kindest and most hospitable communities we have ever worked in, and we count it a blessing to be able serve them.
